Means of Escape for Disabled People

If you have responsibility for a building then you are also responsible for providing a fire safety risk assessment which includes an emergency plan for all people in the building. This includes disabled people who work or resort to the premises. Each of these people should have an individual plan tailored to their specific needs. This is called a Personal emergency evacuation plan or PEEP.

You should also review your policies to ensure you are not discriminating against disabled people and take steps to overcome any physical barriers that make it difficult for a disabled person to use a service.

We can help you provide your disabled staff, including the visually impaired and even your visitors, with a PEEP. We will also ensure that your PEEPs are properly integrated into your fire risk assessment.

A PEEP must take account of the following:

  • The disabled person's movement within the building
  • The operational procedures within the building
  • The types of escape that can be made available
  • The building systems, e.g. the fire alarm and
  • The egress plan

We can carry out a risk assessment based on your current evacuation plans, or we can develop a plan for you. We will meet with the disabled person(s) and discuss their escape plan and capabilities with them. We will then write up an agreed PEEP for each individual.

We are also able to develop generic PEEPS for the use of visitors to your premises.

In some cases able bodied helpers will be an integral part of the escape plan. We can develop and train your staff to understand their role and assist with fire drills.
